Formally Hotel Nikko, this property is located near the heart of the Buckhead neighborhood. The hotel has 439 rooms, including 21 suites. It features a Japanese zen garden, outdoor heated pool, a club lounge, two dining options, and complementary car service within a two-mile radius. The Grand Hyatt is a World of Hyatt category 3 hotel requiring only 12,000 Hyatt points per night.

Overnight self-parking is $28 and valet is $39 with in/out privileges.



This being a category 3 Hyatt I decided to book for free, using my Hyatt credit card anniversary night. Being a Globalist member I am entitled to the best available room, including their lowest level suite, which, in this case, is called a Grand suite. The receptionist was proactive in giving me this when checking in so by using my credit card free night and hotel status I was able to stay in a $308 suite for free.


The first thing I noticed when I drove up to the entrance is the beautifully manicured flowers. It’s small things like this that can really jump-start your stay in the right direction.


I was immediately greeted by a valet. They unloaded my bags onto the bellhop cart and showed me to the reception desk. The receptionist was friendly and, as I mentioned above, upgraded my room to a suite without me asking. She thanked me for being a Globalist and after a swipe of my credit card I was off to my room.





I had room 2308, which is one floor down from the Club lounge. The lounge can be accessed from the 23rd floor by a flight of stairs or the elevators. They advertise Grand suites to be 650 sq ft to 700 sq ft. This one was toward the smaller end but still spacious with a large bedroom and separate living area. The living room consisted of a love seat and single chair with a 42 inch TV hung against the wall.




The closet and mini-fridge were located in a small entryway leading to the bedroom. The closet is where the robes and safe were located. The robes were one-size-fits-all. I’m 6ft 215 lbs and they didn’t fit that comfortably on me.




Above the mini-fridge was the Keurig coffee machine. There were no beverages in the fridge but with the Club lounge just steps away it wasn’t a problem.



The bed was the firmest I think I’ve ever slept on in a hotel. I prefer a soft mattress, so I wasn’t a huge fan. The pillows were great though.


Both nightstands had easy access to outlets that were on the base of the lamps. 🙌🏽



The TV and dresser are directly in front of the bed with the work desk just to the right.




There was a chair and a table just left of the bed by the windows. It was comfortable but I found it to be a better spot to place my bags.



The views from the room were decent. You could see downtown Atlanta in the distance.


The wi-fi in the room was solid the entire stay.


Overall, I thought the room was spacious, but it needs a facelift. The bedroom TV seemed old. It wasn’t as good as the one in the living room and the sea-foam green bed skirt and headboard went terribly with the brown carpet. The public spaces of the hotel look beautiful and have a clean, luxurious feel. This room, however, did not.


There’s nothing special about the bathroom as you can see. I do appreciate when hotels leave toothpaste out instead of me having to call down for it, though.



The toiletries were from June Jacobs Spa Collection. I’m not a big fan. I think Grand Hyatts should have something a little better.




The hairdryer was a true classic; the Voyager 1875.


I can’t speak on whether the water pressure was good in the room. I ended up showering in the locker room of the fitness center. You’ll understand why when you see it.

Fitness center

The fitness area is located on level 3 and is open 24 hours a day. It’s one of the better hotel gyms I’ve seen recently, with lots of cardio machines and several different weight machines, including free weights.





Fruit flavored water was located on the table close to the entrance. Dry or cold towels were in the hallway leading to the locker rooms.



The gym had separate men’s and women’s locker rooms, each with a sauna, a steam room, and a place to lounge and watch TV.





The shower in the locker room was fantastic. There were eight different streams of water in all. One rainfall shower head, one handheld shower head, and six heads on the wall. It may not have been an Italian white marble shower but it sure made up for it with a powerful dose of water.


They do provide the bathroom essentials in case you prefer to get ready in the locker room.


The fitness area and locker room get high marks for fitness equipment and locker room amenities.

Pool/Zen Garden

The heated pool is opened from 6am-11pm seasonally and is surrounded by a Japanese zen garden.





The hotel does offer pool toys and you can order food and drink that can be delivered poolside.




The hotel does have an outside bar but it’s only open on Saturdays and holiday weekends, from my understanding.



Both the zen garden and pool area are well executed. I’m not one for walks in the park, but it was nice to escape the city and take a quick stroll through the zen garden.

Club Lounge

Club lounge is located on the top floor and is available to Club level guests and Globalists. There you’ll find breakfast, afternoon snacks, and evening hors d’oeuvre. For a hotel that has 439 guest rooms, the lounge is small but luckily for me the lounge was never crowded while I was there.







The evening hors d’oeuvre spread was mostly grilled vegetables with some cured meat. The one hot item was buffalo cauliflower. There is also an honor bar with beer and liquor, or you could make a cocktail.







I was in a hurry to leave the hotel the following morning, so I’m not sure what they served for breakfast. Overall, I thought the offerings were good but if the lounge were overcrowded, like I suspect it is sometimes, I don’t know if it would be worth it to pay for lounge access.


Besides room service, there are two restaurants on site, Cassis and Onyx at the Grand. Cassis is located one floor below the lobby. They serve breakfast and lunch. I didn’t have time to check it out so this photo is all I have.


Onyx at the Grand is located in the lobby and serves lunch and dinner.




I picked the cozy spot in the corner for dinner, looking out at the zen waterfalls. I was immediately greeted and was brought some homemade bar chips as a snack.


I wasn’t that hungry but wanted to see how good the service was here so I ordered some chili off the Cassis lunch menu and ordered the scallops from the Onyx menu. After waiting 15 minutes for the chili I knew what was about to happen. She ended up bringing all of it at the same time. They were both hot, but the chili had a skin layer at the top of it like it had sat underneath the heat lamp for quite some time.



Both were good, but the scallops didn’t come as described on the menu. Here’s a photo of the menu, the scallops were described as pan seared with bacon broth, crisp Serrano ham and petite local greens. There were no greens to be found, and I have no idea what the sauce on the side was. Still, it was tasty.

I didn’t have many interactions with hotel associates. The receptionist upgrading me to a suite without asking is always a plus but the waitress at Onyx should have gotten my food out to me in the appropriate time and order. But since I was by myself, I didn’t mind that much. Overall, I’d give them 7.6/10 for this stay.


This place has so much potential with its gorgeous public spaces. The fitness center, zen garden, and pool are some of my favorite features. If they upgraded their rooms and elevated service they could be a first-class property in the Buckhead neighborhood. With that said, I would still recommend this place to anyone looking for a good hotel in Atlanta.

  1. Another great review! Wow! What an outdated room. The carpet, furniture and shower curtain all need to go. I love when a hotel provides an umbrella for you, especially without you having to ask. That’s always a plus for me. Like you, I am picky when it comes to the type of coffee machines in hotels. But I prefer they also provide both a paper and glass coffee cup. Toiletries are also nothing to skimp on. Happy Travels!
